One of the most frequent questions I get from customers is, how often do I need to change my filters? The answer I give depends on the filter they use. A standard 1″ flat panel filter should be changed every 3-4 weeks. A pleated filter about 30 days. A 2″ pleated filter last about 90 days. A Practical Pleat or cartridge filters such as an Air Bear, AprilAire, Honeywell can last 6-12 months.
Of course the conditions the filters are used in determine how long they last. If you have pets, an older house that may have leaks, dusty conditions, and heavy use will shorten the life of any filter. Even filters claiming to last three months have a disclaimer saying to change during heavy use.
It’s best to set a date to check and replace your filter. The first of the month, when you pay your utility bill or some other monthly event to help you remember.
